Princess Mona Capioca is ready to take the throne and officially become Queen Mona Capioca. She’s been training for the throne all her life. She knows sixteen languages, including Stonetornish and Thornbrooki and she already has plans for how she will save her city.
She lives in Restblook, a city sandwiched neatly between the sea and the sky. The Restblook region is known for its daisy-daffodil tea that is said to heighten magical powers.
In order to become Queen, she, by law, has to marry someone with royal blood.
Since the beginning of time, Restblook royalty has found their true love through the same ritual. In order to become the Queen, you must go to the Serendipitous Forest alone and do three things: capture the gem, choose the egg, and find the valley. There, Princess Mona will find her true love for the first time.
After years of preparation, Mona's mother takes her to the Serendipitous Forest and hands her an old scroll. She hugs her daughter and whispers to her:
“Good luck, sweet child, and remember what you see isn't always what is there.” Before she could ask what her mother meant, she was gone. She looked at the dusky jungle ahead of her.
What should she do next?
[[Take a step into the woods.]]
[[Open the scroll.]]
<img src= http://www.awallpapermill.com/img/preview/forest.jpg />Mona enters the woods hesitantly. Even though its early morning, the forest is dressed in the colors of dusk. She can feel the light slipping away with each step.
She doesn't know where she's headed, but she walks without fear.
After walking around for an hour, she discovers the strangest thing--a large land of red.
The towering trees are red, as is the soil and the warm air.
Could this be where the gem is hidden?
[[Open the scroll]]She opens the scroll and reads:
In the center of the heart, you'll find the treasure.
In the center of the egg, you'll find the light.
In the center of the valley, you'll find your true love.
In the center of it all, you'll find...
Where should she go next?
[[Find the lagoon.]]She opens the scroll and reads:
In the center of your heart, you'll find the treasure.
In the center of your egg, you'll find the light.
In the center of your valley, you'll find your true love.
In the center of it all, you'll find...
Princess Mona thinks that the gem *must* be in the lagoon.
How should the Princess obtain the gem?
[[Go to higher land to try to spot it from above.]]
[[Swim in it.]]
[[Use her magic to bring the gem to her.]]Princess Mona climbed a burbranche tree to get a better view of the lagoon.
When she reached the highest branch, she surveyed the red land in its entirety.
She couldn't see anything special but the strangeness of the lagoon.
The outside of the lagoon seemed the deepest, and the very center appeared quite shallow. How peculiar...
What should she do next?
[[Use a spell while still above the lagoon.|Use her magic to bring the gem.]]
[[Get down and swim to it.|Swim in it.]]She jumps into the liquid, which turns her skin a brilliant red. Some liquid splashed onto her lips--accidentally landing in her mouth--and it's *wonderfully sweet*!
The lagoon slowly grows more and more shallow the closer she gets to the center.
She sees something moving in the liquid, and she rushes over as quickly as she can. By the time she reaches the center, there's less than two inches of liquid.
There at her feet sits a beautiful ruby swimming in circles. She scoops it up with both of her hands and places it carefully in her satchel.
Congratulations, the Princess has completed the first part of her quest!
Where should she go next?
[[Find the valley. Let's finish this quest once and for all.]]
[[It's time to choose the egg.]]
She uses a spell she's known her whole life. If done correctly, it brings any object on your mind to you. When Mona was young, she would use the spell for clumps of candy, and it always appeased her sweet tooth.
She thought long and hard about the gem, but nothing happened after she completed the spell.
*Did I mess it up?* she asked herself and tried again. Again, it didn't work.
What should she try next?
[[Swim in the lagoon.|Swim in it.]]
[[Find an aerial view of the lake. She'll be able to see better that way.|Go to higher land to try to spot it from above.]]Mona enters the woods hesitantly.
*Could that be where the gem is hidden*, she wonders.
How should she locate the gem?

[[Swim in it.|Swim in it.]]
[[Conjure up a spell to bring the gem to her.|Use her magic to bring the gem to her.]]
Princess Mona wanders aimlessly around the forest for hours. She finds flowers, mushrooms, and trees she's never see before. The forest is truly lovely--despite the dusky darkness-but she can't seem to find the valley.
What can she do?
[[Go back and search for the eggs.]]As soon as Mona searches for the eggs, she finds them nestled into the grass.
There are three of them. Each egg is unlike anything she had ever seen.
The largest egg was made of a shiny porcelain. It glowed ever so slightly, and upon close inspection, Mona notices the egg is iridescent. From one angle, it's pink and tangerine, and from the next angle, it's violet and indigo. She longs to run her fingertips along the smooth surface.
The second egg is even more bizarre than the rainbow egg. It's drenched in a deep black, and it appears gooey to the touch. She's curious about what's inside...
The last egg is the smallest and could fit into her palm. It was a simple little thing--covered in moss and dew. It silently breathed in unison with her, but she didn't notice. Instead, she was overwhelmed by the feeling of spring. The blossoms, the breeze, the birds--this egg reflected it all.
Which egg should she select?
[[Pick the rainbow one.|The rainbow egg.]]
[[Definitely the black one.|The black one.]]
[[Choose the breathing green one.|The breathing one.]]She uses a spell she's known her whole life.
[[Swim?|Swim in it.]]She picks up the egg and it dissolves into her hand with a nasty hiss, leaving nothing behind but a slimy purple yolk.
[[Choose the grassy egg instead.|The breathing one.]]
[[Try the black egg instead.|The black one.]]Before even touching it, the black egg transforms into lilac and periwinkle flowers. Princess Mona has never seen anything like it. Of course this is the one, of course; beauty is on the *inside.*
But nothing else happens...
What should she do?
[[Search for the valley.]]
[[Follow her instinct and choose another egg.]]The egg warms her hands and radiates a beautiful shimmery light leading her into the darkest part of the forest...
[[Follow it.]]The Princess searches for hours. She's tired, hungry, and disheartened. She opens her satchel and the egg is gone--it disappeared into thin air.
[[Go back to the eggs.]]Which is the egg for Princess Mona?
[[Let's try the rainbow egg.|The rainbow egg.]]
[[Green one.|The breathing one.]]Which egg will fulfill her destiny?
[[Try the green one.|The breathing one.]]
[[Do the iridescent one.|The rainbow egg.]]She follows the light and animals--lassheps, yareckis, grassmoors--follow it, too.
She finds a perfect circle of purbranche trees standing tall, and she squeezes herself into the ring with ease.
Below was the valley with a small pool at the very bottom.
[[Get closer to the pool.]]Princess Mona walks closer to the pool. As she looks into the water, she sees the reflection of the sky above, but it looks more like the sunset. The colors are splendid and she watches the pool with awe.
What should she do?
[[Wait for her true love to appear.]]She waits and waits and nothing happens. She looks in the pool and thinks, *"Maybe I'm my own true love"* but she notices that she can't see her own reflection, only the sky above. She grows sad, but remembers what she's carrying with her.
[[Place the gem and the egg into the pool.]]The water bubbles and gurgles. Then, the pool turns to a milky white color. She tries to graze the surface with her fingertips but it's nothing but air.
She hears the wind swirling outside the circle of trees, and a warm breeze funnels down into the center of the circular valley.
She gazes into the pool and she sees the face of a person slowly start to form.
She sees huge brown eyes... High cheeks... Dark skin... Dark hair... A warm smile...
She's looking at the most beautiful girl she's ever seen.

*Do I go home? Do I wait?* she pondered.
Then, she remembered what her mother told her earlier:
*What you see isn't always what is there.*
She must've been speaking about the girl looking back at her.
So she went back to the castle and waited... and waited... until one day, a carriage pulled up to the castle.
The princess stepped out of the carriage, looking even more beautiful than Princess Mona could remember.
Her true love was Princess Sage from Brushfawn. She traveled for forty-two nights in rain and snow to meet Princess Mona.
Mona couldn't believe it--one day she would be Queen, and more importantly, she would be a Queen alongside her *wife*.
[[They lived happily ever after.]]
I think representation in media is really, *really* important.
In this game, I tried to borrow from traditional fairy tales but add a nice twist--a queer relationship.
I didn't want to complicate the ending reveal with thoughts of, *"Am I gay? Will I be accepted? Could this possibly be true?"*
In order for queer relationships to truly be accepted in our society, we must recognize them as normal, common. We need to show these relationships in all digital narratives; especially those for children.
Thank you for playing my game.
